Sophomores & Juniors
Your student has finally learned his or her way around campus and knows exactly what to expect on the first day of classes when a new semester begins. Your student has maneuvered through all of the tough lessons learned as a freshman, but now he or she has a whole new set of transitions to go through. The following is a list of resources and unique opportunities compiled especially for sophomores and juniors.

Academics

Students should stay abreast of all class requirements as they move into a time of deciding majors and applying to professional schools like Pharmacy, Business, Journalism or Nursing. They should consult the following resources as well as contact the school in which they are interested for more details on requirements and application processes.

Career Planning and Student Jobs

Although your student is not a senior yet, it is important that he or she consider the future while deciding on a major or professional school to enter. Also, many sophomores and juniors find internships to be very useful tools in gaining experience, exploring careers and developing a resume. Others choose to work in a local business or on campus to earn extra money.

  • University Career Services to make an appointment with a career advisor and view a schedule of upcoming seminars. Also, look at postings for internships and post a resume.
  • Optimal Resume through Career Services to create a professional resume to be used for interviews and applications.
  • The Learning Center for preparation for the MCAT, GMAT, LSAT, GRE, etc.
  • For part-time semester and summer jobs in the area, students can view the University Career Services (UCS) listing if they have registered on the Web site. Students should also check with individual departments around campus where they would be interested in working.

On and Off-Campus Housing

There are diverse living options for students in Chapel Hill. Several apartments and townhouses are located within walking or biking distance, and many others are covered by Chapel Hill Transit bus routes. Some students choose to live off campus, but a great number also decide to stay on campus in residence halls or student apartments on South Campus.

Student Activities and Services

Sophomore and junior years are the perfect time for students to get involved in student organizations, campus life and the greater Chapel Hill community. Your students also should not hesitate to consult a student services department whenever they need assistance.
